Tureen
Dallas, TX
Founded in 2023, Tureen is a project-based contemporary art gallery located in the historic Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. One of only a few queer, indigenous-owned exhibition spaces in the world, its mission is to realize the vision of artists working at the intersection of conceptual rigor and divine beauty. Named after Louise Lawler’s seminal photograph Pollock and Tureen, the gallery adopted an almost fetishistic love for irony and ornament at its inception—a 1910s Greek key mosaic tile pattern meanders haltingly through layers of concrete repair across the exhibition floor. Simultaneously the name serves as an invitation, an offering to its home city and the rest of the art world, for a materially and culturally collective vision of art’s promise. The program rejects the mercantilism of today’s market and embraces singular experience. It champions work of historically overlooked genius as well as that of new, ambitious talent. Reflecting the vision of its founders, Tureen endeavors to challenge itself and its supporters to revel in what is found along the way.
